The resource collection of The Ballarat & District Genealogical Society (BDGS) is stored in the Australiana Research Room - Ballarat Central Library, 178 Doveton Street North, Ballarat.

Materials are itemised in the library's online catalogue and are available for public access during library hours. Although we do not roster our members they are often present and along with the Research Librarian will provide assistance to visitors. For the use of our collection we would appreciate a contribution to the donation box if you are not a member of the society.
The Ballarat Courier and Star (newspapers) are available on microfilm at the library. Visitors would most likely want to use the Ballarat Directories to find street addresses and occupations of residents. We have some electoral rolls (1900s), BDMs for all states of Australia, probate index, some school records and church records, Ballarat & surrounding district cemeteries - headstones, transcriptions and/or registers, Ballarat Hospital Admission registers, and many other items of interest to the family historian.
The Ballarat Archives Centre of the Public Record Office Victoria (PROV) is located opposite the library in the Government Offices, cnr Mair and Doveton Streets. This reading room is open Monday and Tuesday 10-4.30pm They hold Victoria-wide BDMS, Inquest Index, Will & Probate Index, Will Transcripts (wills probated before early 1920s), original shipping records on microfilm, Ships' Deserters Lists and Children's Registers on microfiche for those taken in State care. Particularly useful are local rate books and local court registers, a range of maps and many other records.
*$40.00 for the first hour of a research enquiry, for both members and non-members. For any additional hours of research the cost per hour is $40.00 for non-members and $20.00 for members.
