"Sandford House", Sandford, Victoria, Australia John Henry JACKSON b. 1829, Launceston, Tasmania son of John Henry JACKSON and Sarah Elizabeth LOWE was married in 1855 in Victoria to Mary Ann BOWTELL, b. ca 1830, London England, daughter of ___ and ___. John Henry was a nephew of William & Samuel JACKSON who purchased 'Sandford House' from the HENTY family in 1847. Bowtell Creek at Sandford was named after Mary Ann BOWTELL as stated in the following extract from the notes of Dr Ernest Sandford JACKSON, son of this couple. "After crossing the Wannon the expedition (Major Mitchells) made its way over the hills within site of the Glenelg, for 3 or 4 miles, till it came to a creek afterwards named after my mother, Bowtell Creek, which constituted the western boundary of Sandford Estate, as I new it. It was a narrow stream with steep banks. Often have I jumped over it, and ridden across it at the spot known in after years as Mitchells Crossing, and marked by the logs which the explorer sank into the creek to make it fordable for his drays." Mary Ann BOWTELL had arrived in Portland, Victoria from England on the ship 'Birmingham' in 1855 as a carer for the children of Dr Caleb RADFORD a well-known early medical practioner in the district. John Henry JACKSON lived at 'Sandford House' from 1847 (when the JACKSON family purchased it from the HENTY family) until his death in 1915.
