The Ballarat & District Genealogical Society (BDGS) has an extensive collection of resources combined with the Library reference material in the Australiana Research Room of the Ballarat Central Library, 178 Doveton Street North, Ballarat, during library hours, Monday 1:00pm-5:00pm, Tuesday to Friday 9.30am-5.00pm and Sunday 1.15pm-4.00pm. Resources provided for research purposes include Ballarat Directories, Ballarat and surrounding district cemeteries - registers and/or headstone transcriptions, local newspapers on microfilm, searchable CDs for Victorian BDMs and all other states of Australia, Ballarat Base Hospital Admissions Index on microfiche, some electoral rolls (1900s), some school registers and church records as well as a treasure trove of historical books. The library also subscribes to Ancestry.com Sessions can be booked in advance. All these items are available for public access. All we request is a donation to be left in the tin provided. There are usually society members members engaged with their own tasks who will make you feel welcome, but if you are coming from some distance away we can make special arrangements on request. The Reference Librarian is also very helpful and will offer you assistance. The Ballarat Archives Centre of the Public Record Office of Victoria (PROV) is located on the other side of Doveton Street North, NW cnr Mair Street in Government Offices (the Glasshouse). Opening hours are 9.30am - 4.30pm on Monday and Tuesday. Holdings include shipping indexes and passenger lists on microfilm, local rate books, parish and other maps, court records, records of children in institutions, an index to Victorian Inquests, Probate papers, transcripts of Wills and many other records of interest to family historians.
Please include as much information as you can with your inquiries. Reference all the sources you have already searched, and if you have any certificates, images or other documents, please forward photocopies. This just ensures that the researcher does not answer you with data you may already have. We request a donation of $30 for up to one hour's research and an A4 sized SSAE for non-members. For BDGS members research is $15 per hour plus a SSAE, membership number to be quoted. |
