Return to Contacts Page The Ballarat & District Genealogical Society's (B.D.G.S.) collection of microfiche, books etc. are stored in the "Australiana Reference Room" - Ballarat Central Library, 178 Doveton St. Nth, Ballarat. Our material is available for public access during library hours. Monday 1:00-5:00, Tuesday to Friday 9.30-5.00 and Sunday 1.15-4.00. There is usually someone from our group around, although we do not have anyone rostered on duty. The Reference Librarian is also very helpful and will point you in the right direction. The Ballarat Courier and Star (newspapers) are also available on microfilm at the library. We have access to Ballarat Directories, some electoral rolls (1900's), BDM's for all states of Australia, probate index, some school records and church records, Ballarat & surrounding district cemeteries - headstones and/or register transcriptions, Ballarat Hospital Admission registers, and many other items of interest to the family historian. The Ballarat Public Record Office (PRO) Government Offices, cnr Mair & Doveton Sts., is open Monday and Tuesday 9.30 - 4.30. They hold shipping records, local rate books, indexes to Inquests, Probate/Wills, Will Transcripts (wills probated before early 1920's), Vic. BDM'S, court records,. maps and many other records.
Please include as much information as you can with your inquiries. Reference all the sources you have already searched, and if you have any certificates etc., please forward photocopies. This just ensures that the researcher does not answer you with data you may already have. We request a donation of $20 for up to one hours research and a business-sized SSAE for non-members. B.D.G.S. members research is $10 per hour plus a SSAE, membership number to be quoted. |
