Locating Military Records
The following links will take you to some very good sites for military information:
- The Australian War Memorial
Excellent website with databases of the Nominal Roll for the Boer War and WW1 online, as well as images, deaths and other information. If you require a copy of an Australian WW1 Service Record then the addresses to write to for Australian Military records can be found on the Australian War Memorial website in the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) section.
- WW2 Nominal Roll (Australia)
The World War Two Nominal Roll was created to honour and commemorate the men and women who served in Australia's defence forces and the Merchant Navy during this conflict.
This site contains information from the service records of some one million individuals who served during World War Two.
You may search for service record details by specifying name, service number, honours, place (of birth, of enlistment, or residential locality at enlistment). Once you find an individual service record you can print a certificate of service, if you wish.
- Australian Archives Defence Records

The service records of these servicemen and women are preserved in the Canberra office of the National Archives. WW1 Service Dossier Request Form is an online link will take you to an online request form at the Australian Archives where it can be ordered for $15 AUS, this is more convenient than the written request but only applies to WW1 records.

- Australian War Graves in South Africa
This project, by the Heraldry & Genealogy Society of Canberra, aims to publish the database of burial and memorial locations of Australians who died during the second South African Anglo-Boer War of 1899 - 1902. Also included are biographies, researched by the Society, of selected soldiers from each of the Australian States.
- Graves & Memorials of Australians in the Boer War 1899-1902
This site was developed by members of the Society to support family historians whose field of study takes in the Anglo-Boer War of 1899–1902. It was launched on 11 October 1999—the 100th anniversary of the start of the war—and was re-developed in the first quarter of 2002.
The Department of Veterans' Affairs assisted with funding in 1999 under the Federal Government's 'Their Service—Our Heritage' commemorative program. The National Memorial Council of South Africa provided the Australian records from their Victims of Conflict database through the Office of Australian War Graves.
The site now has a searchable database of information from Australian Boer War memorials. The work on this database is on-going and we welcome contributions of photographs and transcriptions of memorials.
- Anglo Boer War Database (Searchable)
Searchable database from the South African Monuments Council of individuals killed in the Anglo Boer War. Name, rank and unit were displayed, but all other relevant details such as grave, date of death and interment have to be requested from the site. Click on library and an email address is given where you can request details. These details are charged for but these charges can be requested at the same time as the details.
- ANZAC Commemorative Site
Site devised by the Commonwealth Department of Veterans Affairs. Contains a good overview with images of the Australian involvement at ANZAC.

Database of Australian Honours and recipients, including military honours awarded since 1901.
- Australian Light Horse Association
Welcome to the website of the Australian Light Horse Association Ltd, a non-profit organisation, whose aim is to preserve the history and tradition of the Australian Light Horse and its predecessors.
The site is dedicated to the Australian Light Horse Regiments, and the Light Horsemen who served their country in both war and peace, and contains both historical and current information on famous regiments and famous battles, as well as information on both ordinary soldiers and commanders, existing Military Units, current Re-enactment Troops, and Light Horse Museums.

- Australian Involvement in Vietnam
This page was put together by Ern Marshall because of the lack of information about the Australian Involvement in Vietnam and for the benefit of all Veterans, and maybe for the education of some of the younger generation.
- Vietnam Veterans' Association of Australia
- World War 1 - Trenches on the Web
You are at the "Trenches" Home Page. These pages contain information on the people, places, and events that comprised one of the worst calamities of modern history. Entire kingdoms were to vanish in the clash. The map makers of the world would be busy indeed!
- Western Front Association
The Western Front Association was formed to further interest in the period 1914-1918. Its principle objective is to perpetuate the memory, courage and comradeship of those, on all sides, who served their country in France and Flanders. It does not seek to glorify war, is entirely non-political and welcomes members of all ages.
- Australians Serving in the Boer War
Many family historians in Australia have a Boer War soldier in their ancestry, although little is usually said about the sacrifices they made.
1999 marks 100 years since the hostilities began in South Africa and hopefully a greater awareness will be kindled throughout Australia. This site is intended to guide, inform and entertain those beginning their research just as it should help the more experienced ones.
