Xanthorrhoea Australis History of Newsletter, Name & Emblem

From the names suggested by members, Ballarat Link has been chosen as it is consistent with the publication's purpose to reflect increasing emphasis on genealogical topics in and pertaining to the Ballarat and Central Highlands District.

Adjacent to the title is an illustration of Xanthorrhoea Australis, commonly known as the Australian Grasstree. This plant, which is found in our forests and on burnt ground, is considered to be one of a small number found of plants associated largely with our area. The illustration on the Ballarat Link is the work of Miss Helen Burgess, who has a keen interest and demonstrated skills in natural history and artwork. Thanks to Helen, who not only prepared the illustration but also offered advice about the choice of emblem.
