BROWN / CLEMENCE
BROWN Samuel (grocer) & BROWN nee Sarah M N CLEMENCE, parents of Thomas BROWN, born 1838(?) Dartford, Kent, England. Died Pitfield Plains 5th Sept 1911 aged 76yrs. Buried Pitfield Cemetery - registered & headstone. Resident of the colony 63years.
Thomas BROWN was born in Dartford, Kent, England in 1838 he married Alexandrina MUNRO in Smythe's Creek in 1860, they had 11 children in & around Smythe's Creek, Cape Clear, Pitfields area. His death certificate reads that he was a resident of the colony for 63 years, that would seem to indicate that he was 10years old when he arrived. The family stories are that some man (a BROWN) arrived in the colony & became the gold assayer in Ballarat. We thought this was Thomas but he would have been too young, we are wondering if it was Thomas's father, Samuel Brown. If they came to the colony as a family they would have arrived around 1848.

HOLMES / WEBBER
I live in Devon, England. Not far from here lived a family who emigrated to Victoria in 1852. They were John and Jane HOLMES and they sailed with their children on board the Persian arriving in December that year. I've been interested in them for some time and having done some research I wonder if there are descendants there who would be interested and who can perhaps let me know what happened to them. Jane had been a widow when she married John and there were children from that marriage too. That surname was WEBBER.

AITKEN / ROSS
I’m interested in finding information about the AITKEN family who likely owned a timber mill in the Lyons area (or somewhere nearby) near Heywood in south-west Victoria in the late 1800’s. My grandmother was Alice AITKEN (born in the 1890’s) and her brothers were Bert (likely Albert Forman), Norman and others. Alice's parents were Edward AITKEN and Mary Jane Bennett ROSS. Just starting to look for information having received some very old photos of the family.

MOYLE / CLARK
I am wondering if there are any descendants of Stephen Thomas MOYLE and Jane CLARK still living in Victoria. My grandfather Ralph Clark MOYLE was Jane’s oldest child – his father “unknown” but raised as Ralph Clark MOYLE. His mother signed a “Statutory Declaration of Birth” for him in 1931 so obviously didn’t want it known, his birth was registered as Ralf CLARK. As yet I haven’t found out much about the ‘Clark’ family, and it’s this family I would like to know more about. My mother thought they were farming near Camperdown. We have a ploughing competition cup won by F. M Clark at Birregurra in 1866. Known as Uncle Mac I don’t know whether he was Jane’s brother or uncle. Of the half sisters and brothers only Edwin James MOYLE stayed in Australia, daughters Jessie married Joseph Turnbull and had a daughter Nan Richardson and Margaret married Victor Medwell. One of Jane’s sisters married Duncan Stewart and lived in Trafalgar, Victoria.

AUSTRALIAN SERVICE MEN AND WOMEN WAR GRAVES PROJECT
The British War Memorial Project supported by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission are seeking volunteers to assist in the photographic recording of the graves of ALL service men and women who died as a result of their service given during any military action. By visiting the British War Graves Project you will read the story behind the project, browsing through the site you will see the work that has been done so far.

The Project Co-Ordinator for Victoria Australia is Anna (Anja) van Steel, is needing your help with the Ballarat and surrounding cemeteries in photographing the graves of fallen soldiers. The list supplied has 60+ names and location of the graves to make is some what easier for Ballaarat Old and Ballarat New but we know this is inaccurate, by how much is uncertain. Whilst 60+ does not sound a lot of graves to cover, but we need to have all sections checked to make sure none are missed. I have visited one cemetery at another location that was listed to have none but I found 3.

Digital photographs are preferred but film will be accepted if that is what you have. Digital need to be unedited and best quality, that is no cropping or resizing.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer then please contact me, including your details, what areas you maybe able to cover and I will go over specific details and requirements with you. Your name will be added to the volunteer list on the site, unless you don't want it listed, photo not necessary.

O'SULLIVAN / PRESCOTT / HAYES
My great grandmother Margaret Mary HAYES from Co. Clare, Ireland was married to Dermod O'SULLIVAN sometime before 1896, perhaps in India. Dermod was in the army, maybe the Royal Irish Artillery. While in the Ballarat area they had 2 children, Randal and Mary. Dermod was apparently killed in action probably in South Africa. Margaret HAYES then married a man called PRESCOTT who was a gold prospector. They had a further 2 children both born in Australia, it is thought still around Ballarat; a boy in about 1896 who died by drowning in an accident in about 1903 (according to hearsay in Sydney harbour); and Gertrude Margaret (b. 2 May 1899), who was my grandmother. The family went to live in South Africa in about 1905. Apparently there was a fire on board the ship. I would be happy to remunerate anyone who could obtain the relevant marriage and birth records and any other information. My name is Tom CRISP. I am English but live in France.
