FREEMAN, Ballarat
I have found the death registration of a Patrick FREEMAN who died in 1863 age 33 years. It does not state where he died, but the Patrick FREEMAN I am looking for had a son born in Ballarat the previous year. I would therefore like to ask if anyone has access to Ballarat Cemeteries Registers or Memorial Inscriptions and if so could they please provide me with any details of Patrick FREEMAN and anyone who is buried with him. I am also interested to know if his wife Catherine is buried there, and when she died. Thanking you in anticipation.

MORTON / MCGREGOR
I am seeking information on the following families. Alexander MCGREGOR came from Stornaway, Isle of Lewis Scotland in 1852 and was a gold miner at the time of the Eureka Stockade in 1854. He married Grace MORTON at Ballarat in 1856. Grace was the daughter of William MORTON and Mary (nee MCTURK). They had two children Mary McTurk MCGREGOR b. 1856 md. 1877 at Scarsdale to Francis BRINNAND. William MCGREGOR b. 1858 at Magpie. 9 Days after William's birth Grace (his mother) died of puerperal fever following childbirth. Alexander appears to have left the children, as he was found in Hargraves NSW in 1872 and his daughter Mary md. at Scarsdale in 1877. Alexander remarried in 1873 to Margaret LONERGAN (my gt-grandmother) at Hargraves. It is thought that William and Mary were raised by the MORTON family. I am trying to find out what happened to William. I cannot find any death and therefore assume that he did not die at birth. Any help or contact with MORTON and/or William's descendants would be appreciated.

Tracks on the Ballarat Diggings ca. 1854
I am researching aspects of the events at the Eureka Stockade and was wondering if any of your members knew of material related to the existence of tracks, as distinct from known main roads, across the Ballarat diggings ca.1854. My interest is in finding evidence especially of tracks leading along or near to Specimen Gully in the direction of the Eureka Historical Precinct. Speaking to Carrin Greenbank today she suggested that the Ballarat & District Genealogical Society might be a good place to make enquiries, hence this email.
I would be particularly interested in any accounts that members might have of tracks, particularly accounts from ancestors who lived anywhere on the Ballarat diggings at the time that mention tracks or include hand drawn maps that have such things marked on them. This is so even if the accounts are not related to Eureka.
There is anecdotal evidence available that suggests the existence of tracks. This is mostly in the form of maps and some paintings of the diggings. It is also logical to assume that tracks existed in such an intensely populated and worked area, given the very disturbed nature of the ground on the diggings and the need for diggers to move about with relative safety during the day and night.
I have spoken to Roger Trudgoen at the Gold Museum and seen the material on tracks prepared by John Todd that he has available. I have not been able to contact John Todd to discuss the topic.
I hope that you are able to publish my request for help and that members of the Society are able to assist me.

JARRAD / JARRETT
I am researching my Grandparents Jack JARRAD & Dulcie JARRETT who married in Casterton in 1947 and later lived and worked at Warrock Homestead. Jack later lived and worked around the Mt. Gambier area I believe (late 1950’s/early 60’s).
I would love to hear from anyone who knew them or their families.

TWIST or DIGGINGS TWIST / ROWE
Laura Diggings TWIST (unsure whether her middle name was Diggings or whether it was part of her surname. She was an orphan. Have no idea when her parents died. On her death certificate lists mother as unknown. She was born in Ballarat in 1865 and died in 1942. Married John ROWE (unsure of any birth or death dates) in 1885 and they had 8 children all born in Ballarat. Apparently they ran The Blue Bell Hotel in Wendouree sometime in the late 1800's, early 1900's.
Would love to find any information if possible on John ROWE as we know very little.
Also if there is any way of finding out about Laura's parents?

Details/Photos of Greenhills Primary School - Circa 1900-1915
My family has recently purchased a property in Mt Helen that we have confirmed, with a degree of certainty, is the original site of the Greenhills Primary School. There still exists on the site a particular tree that was reported to have been planted in the school grounds around the turn of the century. My Grandmother, who is still alive, attended this very school around that time. I am after information, details and particularly images of the school from this era. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

JONES / WATHEN (Dunolly)
My Great Great Grandparents were David Robert JONES and Jane Susannah WATHEN. David was born in Carrisot, Merionethshire, North Wales approx 1837. Jane WATHEN was born 1849 in Putney, Surrey. They were married at Dunolly on 7 June 1865 (Davis was 28 years, Jane 16 years). They had eight children: David Robert (1866), Elizabeth Jane (1868), John (b and d 1870), Alice May (my G Grandmother, born 1871), Catherine (1876), Rebecca Ada (1878) Ann (1879), John Charles (1883) Albert (1886). David died as a result of a mine accident on 12 April 1889 and is buried in Dunolly Cemetery. Jane remarried to a John Christopher JONES on 30 April 1890 at the Congregational Church Sandhurst. She died in 1928 in Sydney. I am seeking assistance especially with the WATHEN side of the family. Jane's parents were James WATHEN and Rebecca BECKETT. James WATHEN is listed as a miner on the marriage certificate of David and Jane. He gave his written consent to the marriage so I assume they were living in the area at the time. The place of residence for both David and Jane on their marriage certificate is "Moliagul" and the name of the property appears to be "Lane Farm". I have been unable so far to find any information on their possible death dates/places.

CLARKE / LORD / McKENSIE / McKENZIE
Date of arrival of the CLARKE family from Aston, Birmingham, is unknown, possibly William and John arrived 1848/9 or the whole family might have come together.
William CLARKE spent 12 years in Tasmania and married Charlotte LORD, (born in Montreal, Canada approx 1838/9), in Adelphi in 1862.
Charlotte's family are said to have been McKENZIE / McKENSIE.
William & Charlotte moved to Ballarat for the arrival of their first child, Fanny Elizabeth CLARKE in 1863. William Henry CLARKE was born in Durham Lead, Annie CLARKE and Emily Jane CLARKE in Ballarat, Sarah CLARKE, Arthur Blakemore CLARKE, and Ethel May CLARKE (1879) in Sandhurst. Sometime between this date and 1884, William and Charlotte moved to Sydney.
Fanny Elizabeth CLARKE married in the Hay district in 1887.
The CLARKEs were connected with the brick trade but did mining in Victoria.
William's mother, Sarah CLARKE, died at Ballarat East in 1865. Her death certificate shows her having spent 12 years in Victoria, that would be 1853. Her other sons, were David CLARKE, Henry CLARKE and John CLARKE. John CLARKE married Bridget O'LOUGHLIN in 1873 at Sandhurst and died 1929 in Bendigo. His daughter Sarah (aka Sara Agnes CLARKE), married Francis Charles ARKWRIGHT.
We don't know if Sarah's husband, David, came to Australia as well. We think her eldest son by a prior marriage, Robert COX, remained in England.
Searching for Charlotte LORD's background, David (both senior and junior), and Henry. Does anyone know anything of this family, please?

FENN / BOARDMAN - Smythesdale / Smythes Creek 1860s
Urgently seeking details on a Mary FENN buried in same grave as my Great-great-auntie's husband Henry BOARDMAN. Henry (born in Ireland) married my great grandfather's (John MULLIN) sister Maria MULLIN at Ballarat in 1861. Maria was born in Belfast, Ulster ~ 1841 daughter of a William MULLIN, civil engineer/Government surveyor and Mary nee PATTERSON, a nurse. Maria came to Australia ~ 1850 with her mother, a brother John (born Liverpool in 1846) & a sister Matilda Jane (born ~ 1833 in Belfast, Ulster). It is believed that William died overseas so Mary brought the children to Australia. Maria married a Henry BOARDMAN at Ballaarat Christ Church in 1861 & at that time was living at Smythes Creek, near Ballaarat. The couple lived there and at Illabarook Creek during the period 1861 to 1866. They had 3 children: Jacob (1864), Eliza Ethel (1862) & Henrietta (1866), however both Ethel & Henrietta do not have any living descendant although they did marry. No details of Jacob are known except for his birth! In 1866 Henry died as a result of a horse riding accident; which, according to the inquest occurred somewhere on the road between Smythesdale & Scarsdale . I have interestingly only recently discovered that Henry was buried at Smythesdale Cemetery. His widow Maria is not however buried with him but a Mary FENN is! I believe she was interred during the 1880s. I have no idea who she was! Can anyone please shed some light on who Mary FENN was? Thanking you in anticipation.

HOWARD / DIXON / PENTLAND
I am trying to locate as much information about my great grand mother Ivy Caroline HOWARD. My information is that she was born in Ballarat on the 31st January, 1902. Her father was William Winters HOWARD and her mother was Eliza Jane DIXON. She married Walter PENTLAND and had a child Leslie Raymond PENTLAND who passed away only after 12 or so months and is buried in a Common grave at Fawkner Cemetery. Any one with any information in relation to my grand mother would be most welcome. I would adore photographs. As my mother was adopted/placed with the family I grew up thinking was her family, finding blood relations would certainly give me a connection.

Wills & Probate at PROV - changes to numbering system
The following message is from Jeanette Inglis at PROV:
Dear PROV clients,
From Wednesday April 20th 2005, there will be a change to the format of the numbers used to identify and order Wills and Probates on Archives@Victoria.
If you are able to communicate this advice to your members electronically through a bulletin board or list serve, it would be most appreciated.
The leading zeroes will no longer be dropped from the three digits following the forward slash / in the number identifying the Will or Probate. For example:
Instead of entering 123/45, you will now enter 123/045.
Instead of entering 123/4, you will now enter 123/004.
Instead of entering 1234/56, you will now enter 1234/056.
Note that there will be no change to the way 90% of wills and probates are identified - 123/456 will still be 123/456. This change only affects identifying numbers where the part following the "/" is between 0 and 99 inclusive.
Due to the large volume of records to be amended, the data on Archives@Victoria will be gradually updated between April 20th and May 2nd 2005. During this period it may be necessary to search for a will or probate both with and without leading zeroes. If you have any enquiries regarding this progressive update, please speak to one of our Reference Officers on 1800 657 452.
PROV apologises for this temporary inconvenience and will be appreciative of your patience as we progressively implement this improvement to provide the one numbering format. This amendment will provide consistency for all users, both new and existing, when searching the Wills and Probates holdings online at PROV.
Cheers,
Jeanette Inglis, ARMA

YOUNG / HALL
My maternal Grandmother, Eveline YOUNG (nee HALL) was the second wife of Conrad YOUNG of Dana Street, Ballarat. Conrad died in 1902 just a few years after their marriage leaving Eveline with a young daughter, Ethel and a second to be born after his death, Rita Constance. The family then moved to 608 Windermere Street, where they lived until sometime after 1918, when they moved to Melbourne. It has been suggested that Eveline during the time at Windermere Street was a well-known and respected midwife, perhaps one of the so-called "Granny midwives". In addition, a professional association with Dr W. Sloss has been suggested. Any information providing details of the life of Eveline and her small family at Ballarat would be much appreciated.

HURNALL family from Ararat
I have been given two newspaper articles about Stuart HURNALL's discovery of a 120oz gold nugget on their farm at Armstrong, near Ararat, Victoria (thought to be in 1935). One article states that there was a 82oz nugget found in the same area 48 years earlier. It also mentions Stuart's father, Alfred HURNALL, and uncle, Garnet HOLMES. Another document says that Alfred's father was one of the first to establish an orchard (or similar) in the Ararat area. We think it is Alfred's brother, John Horace HURNALL that came out to NZ about 1885, but the rest of the family stayed in Australia - does anyone know why, or where / when the family originally emigrated from the UK? If you have any information on any of these people, or would be able to help me find the sources of the articles, please feel free to email me.

McINERNEY / McCLUSKY / WILSON
My Great grandparents were Henry McINERNEY (b. 1835 Ireland) and Mary Jane nee McCLUSKY (b. 1834) who were married in Ireland around 1855 and came to Victoria probably the same year. Most of the following information comes from Mary Janes death certificate. Mary Jane lived at 40 Ebden St Ballarat at the time of her death in 1892. She is also listed in the Ballarat Directory 1865-66 as McINNERY, Mrs Mary Jane, Ebden St, Ballarat. They lived in Geelong for a few years and then came to Ballarat before 1865. Nothing at all is known about Henry. He is not buried with Mary Jane in the old Ballarat Cemetery and I can find no death cert for him. Children:
  1. Sarah Jane McINERNEY b. 1856 Geelong, d. 1866 Ballarat
  2. Annie McINERNEY b. 1859, d. 1867 Ballarat
