BELL
'Urgently seeking any information or photographs of my grandfather John BELL, especially pertaining to his younger life. Born illegitimately ~ 1879 in Ballaarat, Victoria, Australia his birth was never officially recorded. Parents were Robert BELL, miner and Isabella PATTIE, seamstress. It is believed the family lived in the Ballaarat area during the late 1870s & early 1880s,and for part of the time may have resided in Wendouree, where Isabella's family lived (15 Burnbank Street). In 1886 the family moved to Glenthompson when Robert joined the Victorian Railways. They stayed at Glenthompson until ~ 1899. Interestingly school records at Glenthompson do not make any mention of John! There is some family tale that due to John's illegitimate birth the family placed him in care of Isabella's sister (Elizabeth GOAD) & her husband Josiah GOAD. However this has never been proven. John's parents ultimately married at Creswick in 1881, although may

MULLIN
Urgently seeking details on the life of my Great-great-auntie, Maria MULLIN. Born in Belfast, Ulster ~ 1841 daughter of a William MULLIN, civil engineer/Government surveyor and Mary nee PATTERSON, a nurse. Maria came to Australia ~ 1850 with her mother, a brother John (born Liverpool in 1846) & a sister Matilda Jane (born ~ 1833 in Belfast, Ulster). It is believed that William died overseas so Mary brought the children to Australia. Maria married a Henry BOARDMAN at Ballaarat Christ Church in 1861 & at that time was living at Smythes Creek, near Ballaarat. The couple lived there and at Illabarook Creek during the period 1861 to 1866. They had 3 children: Jacob (1864), Eliza Ethel (1862) & Henrietta (1866), however both Ethel & Henrietta do not have any living descendant although they did marry. No details of Jacob are known except for his birth! In 1866 Henry died as a result of a horse riding accident; somewhere on the road between Smythesdale.

RODGERS / BRODERICK
RODGERS, John Bernard and BRODERICK, Bridget, are assumed to have been married in Victoria between 1830 and 1842. Only one known son was born in Flemmington/Ballarat, named RODGERS, John Bernard in January 05, 1842. The son RODGERS, John Bernard was a miner at the minefields of Ballarat. Have not been able to find burials for RODGERS, John Bernard (senior) in Victoria and wife RODGERS, Bridget (nee BRODERICK). It is believed that the parents were of Irish descent, no shipping records have been found. Any information on the RODGERS / BRODERICK families is most welcome.

BELL / PATTIE / PAINE
Urgently searching for any information about my grandfather whose birth was never recorded with RBDM. John BELL was born somewhere between 1878 and 1880, probably in or near Ballaarat, Victoria, Australia. I believe his birthday was in October although no-one knows exactly when! His parents were Robert BELL, miner and Isabella PATTIE, seamstress. Strangely on his death certificate his mother's surname is quoted as PAINE. This is odd because one would imagine the immediate family would know the correct name! The BELLs were originally Methodist but there may be links with the Presbyterian church. I do know the PATTIE family lived in Burnbank Street, Wendouree, Ballaarat, Victoria, Australia & attended the local Wesleyan Church so I am wondering whether a baptism was recorded?? If anyone has any information about John BELL and his birth date/place and/or his childhood years I would dearly love to know. I know virtually nothing about his life until much later when he married. Much appreciated.

Norwood Private Hospital / KENNEDY
Information sought about Norwood Private Hospital, run by the KENNEDY family in Webster Street, Ballarat until 1952. The building was taken over by the Mental Health Department and is now part of St. John of God Hospital. Especially interested to hear from anyone working at the private hospital during the 1940's or whereabouts of the hospital's records. My mother was born at the hospital in February 1947 to an unmarried young mother and adopted out later. CUTHBERT
Writing to you from Toronto, Canada. Congratulations to the Ballarat & District Genealogical Society on your 20th anniversary! Saw your post on the soc.genealogy.britain newsgroup. My interest in Ballarat is as follows:
My great grandfather, Robert CUTHBERT, and/or his brothers, William, Richard or George CUTHBERT, went from Ireland to the goldrush at Ballarat in the 1850's. My father once had, but unfortunately lost, a gold ring that belonged to his grandfather, Robert, inscribed with a picture of a pick and shovel crossed, and below it the words "With these I got it".
A few years ago I went to Ballarat, hoping to find some record of my ancestors' activities there, perhaps in the mining records. No luck so far, other than finding what may be my William CUTHBERT on the ships passenger list for the SS Great Britain, April 1857, on the Victoria Archives internet web site. Some time I'd like to find out how I might be able to locate the relevant mining or other records. Any suggestions you can provide would be most appreciated.

BELL / ARMSTRONG
'Seeking information about my great-great grandfather Thomas BELL born Allendale, Northumberland England in 1827. Married Elizabeth ARMSTRONG in Hexham, Northumberland in 1854. Thomas came to Australia in July, 1856 on board the "Lightning". Settled at Winter's Flat, near Magpie, Victoria on John Winter's propertyin 1856. Elizabeth arrived in 1858 on board the "Africa" together with son Robert (my great-grandfather) who was born in 1855. Further children were Eleanor Ann (b.1860/d.1861), twins Annie (b.1862) & Ellen (b.1862/d.1862), 69), Mary Elizabeth (b.1867), Hannah Jane (b.1869) & Thomas Henry (b.1871). Elizabeth died at Cambrian Hill in 1876. Thomas was a gold miner (engine driver I believe though this is unconfirmed) and had brothers Robert (born 1835) & Hugh (born 1837) both living in the area. I am particularly interested to find exactly where they lived in these areas and locate missing photographs and other information about Thomas and family. Any feedback very much appreciated.'

BRADSHAW / Ballarat Boarding House ca 1880
My ancestors Edwin & Jane BRADSHAW spent most of their time in Buninyong but in the family album are a couple of photo's. One is of the family leaning out the windows of a large two story place and it is labled Boarding house run by Mrs E BRADSHAW Ballarat. The other is unidentified but appears on the same page. Due to the age of my great great grandmother in the photo I would date it as being from the late 1880's.
I wondered if someone may be able to identify the location of the buildings.

HALL/ SHUTER/ PUCKLE / THOMSON/PERN/ CAREW SMYTHE
Lindsay Bernard HALL was Director of the National Gallery of Victoria from 1892 – 1934. He married Elsinore Mary SHUTER (daughter of Melbourne Police Magistrate, Charles SHUTER and sister of Carrie PUCKLE) in 1894, with whom he had one son, Basil in 1896. Eleven years after her death in 1901, he married Harriet Grace THOMSON who bore him three children, daughter Alison in 1913 and sons Oswald and Lawrence in 1917 and 1919.
Friends and associates known to have lived in or moved to the Ballarat area include Dr Sydney PERN and his wife, and art teacher, CAREW-SMYTHE.
Hall’s work is not as well known as other artists of his time, but he painted a great number of portraits as well as landscapes and still life studies. His portraits included commissioned studies of prominent figures, pastoralists, academics, businessmen and politicians, and others of family members, friends and associates, all those listed above among them.
He also painted many studies of women for which he used professional models. These included Misses GRAFF, HORNSBY, LAULETTO, MURRAY, FRIEND, SHERWOOD, ROBINSON, DELAMERE, HONART, SAMPSON, DREW, WOOD, EMMETT and FREEDMAN. I believe the stories of these ladies could greatly increase understanding of the overall artistic production of that time. Information about any of the above, would be very much appreciated. I am also trying to locate any of HALL’s pictures that may still be around in private collections. The whereabouts of a large number of his portraits in particular remains unknown today. He usually signed his paintings, ‘B. Hall’ in one corner, but rarely dated his work. For further details about my research you may like to go to the following website:

My ancestor Alexander McFadden and his father Michael were close to the Eureka Stockade in 1854 having traveled to the goldfields from Van Dieman’s Land in 1850 after completing their 7 years transportation. In 1857 Alexander was married (Sarah McGUIRE) at Kyneton and in 1860 Alexander was the Coliban Diggings. He died in 1908 (noted on death certificate that he was a Victorian Old Age Pensioner – anybody know if the application records exist) at Cosmo Road Trentham, Kyneton. John BIRCH, 12th Regiment, Eureka, 1854
I am seeking any information on my great great uncle John BIRCH, a private in the 12th Regiment, who deserted at Ballarat on 12th January 1855. He had arrived there in the company that was force marched from Melbourne on October 21, 1854, 3 days after disembarking from Cork, Ireland. I don't know whether he was amongst the 65 or so members of the 12th regiment involved in attacking the Eureka Stockade. John BIRCH died in the Benevolent Asylum in Bendigo in July 1900 aged 67 and was buried in a pauper's grave in the White Hills cemetery. I seek information on Charles Tracy ST QUINTIN (b.1873-d.1935), who married Mary Millicent WILSON in Melbourne in 1900. I believe the ST QUINTIN family returned to England, residing at different times in South Africa and Rhodesia as well as England. Charles died in 1935 in South Africa, but at that time I believe he was seperated from Mary, and I also believe she did not reside in South Africa. Mary died in Ballarat in 1949 aged 76. I seek descendants of Charles and Mary, the only trace I have of Mary is a letter written by her solicitor in Ballarat in 1935. Any information on Henry William's brother, John Edward ST QUINTIN (b.1851-d.1907), who came to Australia at roughly the same time would be also appreciated.

Congregational Church, Dunolly, Vic.
I am researching this church/parsonage built 1860. Closed around 1883/84 but I can find no parish records. Does anyone have photos or info about ministers or person baptised, married, funeral services in this church or persons living in the parsonage. The land which the parsonage stands on was sold 1894 but was the church still standing at that time? When did the church get pulled down or destroyed?

EISENBERG
I am researching the family history of George Paul EISENBERG. In April, 1911 the first child (Bertha Amy EISENBERG) was born in Scarsdale, in January, 1912 (Eric Herman EISENBERG) was born in Ballarat. By 1916 the family had moved to Tasmania. during the period 1912 -1916 the family consisting of George, his wife Amy and their two children lived for a period of time at 711 Sturt Street Ballarat.
My grandfather was a butcher and my grandmother a very good cook. I am hoping that some record of the business they ran may be available in the business directories of the time. I am also hoping that some one can tell me whether the address 711 Sturt St would have been residential or business with the family living on the premises.

CHARLES / DAVIES
I am trying to find out about my family who came to Victoria, Austraila on a ship called the "Corona" in February 1869. Their names were John CHARLES and his wife Miriam (Mary Anne) [nee DAVIES] with three small daughters, Evangeline, Jessie and Florence. They originated from Merthyr, Glamorgan in south Wales. I believe they were farmers. There were two more daugthers that I know of : Sarah Jane (my gg grandmother), and Miriam born in Ballarat before the family moved back to Hopkinstown, Pontypridd, Wales in the late 1870s. My mother tells me that a son was also born and died out there, the reason for them returning to Wales. The family also believes that there were two daughters remaining in Australia, however I know from the British census that all those named above returned to Wales before 1881. Miriam CHARLES maiden name was DAVIES. There may have been some of her relatives with them. Does anyone have any information? I am grateful for any leads. If any one knows anything, I have a wonderful picture of the family a few years after they returned to Wales that I am happy to share.

Australian Polo Team [1883] - PALMER / STANTON / HOOD / St QUINTIN / AITKEN / WARE / HELPMAN
Does anyone recognise this photograph (click on photo for an enlargement) believed to be of the first Australian Polo Team taken in the 1870's. A comment on the back of the photograph says that it was presented to J. P. STANTON, who is believed to be one of the men in the photograph. The player on the far left is probably Frederick William PALMER and one of the other palayers could be A. HOOD. Any information gratefully received about names in the photograph or history associated with the team. The team was believed to have played in Warrnambool.
Reply 1:
I have found some further information for you in regard to this photo. The First Game of polo in Australia was played on 23rd July, 1874 on Sydney's Moore Park.
Your photo is of the 1883 team which played the first inter-colonial game against Adelaide, and won.
Left to right are: Oliver PALMER, William HOOD, Thomas St QUINTIN, Henry St QUINTIN, V. AITKEN, W.S. HELPMAN and George WARE (reclining). I believe it was played at Warrnambool. My research findings: Captain St QUINTIN, who is believed to be among the first to introduce the game into England introduced polo to the western district of Victoria through his brothers, John and Henry, who had settled there, buying a sheep station called Dwarroon, near Cudgee. The Warrnambool Standard of 22nd August, 1874 reported a game at Jetty Flat. The eight players included the three St QUINTIN brothers together with Oliver PALMER, C. WOODWARD, Tom BROWN, A MacKENZIE and A. URQUHART of Yangary. Soon after, George WARE and William HOOD formed a polo club at Warrnambool which continued for 11 years. Reply from : jome@ozemail.com.au
Reply 2: Additional Query / Information / St QUINTIN
I was fascinated and so excited to see the polo team photo 1883 featuring Henry St QUINTIN, my father's grandfather. My father was raised as an orphan in South Africa, so no other photos exist that I am aware of. Do you have any other informtion on the photo - where did it come from - who holds the orginal now? Who is 'Captain' St QUINTIN (I wonder if it was John Edward) and should the Thomas also be a 'St' QUINTIN. Do you have any other information on the St QUINTIN family, whom I believe resided in Warrnambool from the late 1860's to 1900. I wait eagerly your reply.

Any information on the following:
Contact: David Burrows - EMAIL: calval@bigpond.com
- Alexander BURROWS b.1836, Sligo, Ireland.
- Jane BURROWS (nee CUMMINGS) b.1843 Tipperary, Ireland.
- Married 1868 Ballarat VIC Australia.
- Date and place of death unknown.
- Son Andrew BURROWS died 31/7/1916 and was buried in the Catholic section of the Karrakatta WA cemetery.
- Alexander signed his name in the birth register for Andrew (12/5/1869) in good handwriting indicating a good education and a knowledge of his correct age which he recorded as 32 which would also indicate his DOB as between 12/5/36 and 12/5/37.
- Alexander recorded his occupation as miner and birthplace as County Sligo Ireland (as apposed to Sligo town). Length of time he lived on the Ballarat gold fields is not known.
- Although Jane does not appear to have signed Andrews birth register her name is recorded as "Jane Cummings (late Culner?)" - spelling may be incorrect and her age as 25 indicating her DOB as between 12/5/1843 and 12/5/1844
- No evidence that Alexander and Jane stayed and died in Ballarat or left as a family with son to WA.
- Andrew BURROWS b. 12/5/1869, Sebastopol Vic. died 31/7/1943 Perth WA
- Emily Maud BURROWS (nee MORAN) b.27/6/1878 Sydney NSW died 20/11/1933 Perth WA
