MIGHELL (pronounced mile) / GOWINGI'm looking for information about Edward John MIGHELL (pronounced mile) who was born in Ballarat in 1856. His mother Naomi (nee GOWING) died the same year at Buninyong and in 1865 his father Philip MIGHELL went back to England taking only one of his four children and apparently leaving the other three to fend for themselves. I am trying to establish whether Edward survived, but so far I haven't been able to find any marriage or death records in that name. There was a 10 year old John MILES who died at Buninyong in 1867, perhaps this refers to Edward John MIGHELL. Does anyone have a list of burials at Buninyong cemetery? And if so do any of these names appear on it?

Harry FRYInformation is sought on Harry FRY, b 1861, the ninth child of Richard and Patience FRY. Richard FRY and Patience PEARCE were married in Windsor, Berks, in 1842, and had five children born in England and a further six in Australia. They emigrated in 1852-3 and eventually settled in Ballarat in 1854. Of the eleven children, two died in infancy. The other children were Susannah (m George AVERY, 12 children), Jane Melba (m James THOMAS, 3 children), Ann Eliza (m John O’NEILL, 2 children), Eliza (m James PATTIE, x children), Thomas, Richard (m Sarah COYTE, 5 children), Harry, Ellen (m William FOLKES, 9 children) and James. We have a fairly comprehensive history of these families and their descendants, but we know very little about Harry.
Contact: Ian Fry - EMAIL: ivfry@alphalink.com.auThere is a family story that Harry used to brood alone in the market garden behind 303-307 Clyde St, Ballarat, also known as Fry’s Paddock, which went back to Crompton St. Harry was said to have gone out west (perhaps to the West Australian goldfields?) and was still alive in 1911, according to Richard Fry’s death certificate. So far, we have had no luck in tracing him.
We are having a family reunion for all the descendants of Richard and Patience FRY in Ballarat on the weekend of February 28-29, 2002, so if we could find out what happened to Harry before that time we would be very gratified.
If you have information, or are interested in the family reunion, please respond to:

WILLIAMS / LILAMary Eliza was the wife of Christopher WILLIAMS. She was born in about 1858 in Ballarat, Australia.
Contact: Rog and Sue Frost - EMAIL: rog_and_sue@locksands.freeserve.co.uk
In 1881 Christopher and Mary Eliza were living in Redruth, Cornwall, United Kingdom. They had a ten month old son called Edward.
We do not know if Christopher and Mary Eliza married in Australia or the UK, but we cannot trace a marriage in the UK.
By 1891 the family were still in Redruth, with more children, Thomas (aged 9), Mary (aged 7) and Christopher (aged 1 month)
The following inscription comes from the web site of memorial inscriptions for St Euny, a church in Redruth. Christopher WILLIAMS 31/5/1900 47 also Mary Eliza (nee LILA) wife 3/3/1896.
From this we think that Mary Eliza was surnamed Lila before her marriage.
We would appreciate any information on this family.

AVAGE / LEDWITH / "Admella" ShipwreckOn Friday 5th of August 1859, Bridget Ledwith, aunt of Catherine Cloonan (nee Kenny) boarded the "Admella" at Port Adelaide en route to Melbourne. She intended to visit her sister in Ballarat, but little knew that of the 113 passengers and crew aboard, only she and 27 others would survive the tragedy that was to follow.
Contact: Kevin Cloonan - EMAIL: kcloonan@optusnet.com.au
In the early hours of Saturday, August the 6th, off the treacherous South Australian coast, in darkness and fog, a violent storm was in progress. The Admella`s crew, mistakenly, believed they were some miles off shore and were anxious to confirm their position by siting the Cape Northumberland Light.
While the men on the bridge were staring into the night their ship caught on a swell and rode onto a reef and stuck fast.
This was the beginning of an ordeal that was to see most of the passengers and crew perish as they attempted to swim to safety, or disappear beneath the waves as they were swept away in some improvised craft that was not equal to the fury of the seas.
Eventually after eight days of abortive rescue attempts and loss of life, the final successful mission was made by the "Ant" and "Lady Bird" using the whaleboat from the Portland whaling station.
Of the women and children on board, only Bridget Ledwith survived the ordeal. Although in a parlous state when rescued, she did recover and was last heard of in 1907, under the married name of Mrs J Avarge of Howitt St, Wendouree. Ian Mundie, in his book "Wreck of the Admella" documents the circumstances of this tragic event.

WARHURSTWhen I first began my family research it did not take me long to recognize the fact that I was much more a meat on the bones family researcher as opposed to a dates and numbers one. I also found as many anomalies in the dates and numbers as there were in the family anecdotes so I decided I would try to make the most out of both.
Contact: Jenny Sandercock, 35 Kandahar Crescent, Colonel Light Gardens, South Australia 5041 - EMAIL: jennys2@chariot.net.au
But in this day and age of genetic research I was pleased to discover that the genes don’t lie although again there is always a variation to the ‘rule of thumb’.
In July 2003 an ABC television programme called ‘Dimensions’ featured a segment on genetics and mentioned among many things the attempts to find the gene that predestines us to a talent like ‘music’ and I was elated for I knew it was all ready so from my own family research.
From my research I found warnings to beware of heart disease, diabetes, depression and alcoholism, on the up side I found talents for art, gardening (going back many generations and still going) cooking, medicine, engineering but the most amazing was the music! Such a cheerful gene!
The Warhurst family first arrived in 1839 aboard the ‘Delhi’from Stockport in Lancashire, Ali my first cousin once removed, from this line was born in Ballan Victoria, like her brother Ellis, she could play just about any instrument given to them. Both she and her brother were champion drummers and Ali is featured in the Unley Orchestra when they won the Ballarat Competitions in 1926 (picture generously supplied by the Unley Museum) some members of the family left Adelaide in the 1850's for the Ballarat gold fields and ended up farming in Ballan. William Warhurst left Ballan and settled in Urana, NSW. He also has a lot of muscial descendents.
Edward Warhurst arrived in South Australia on Christmas Day in 1857 aboard the ‘Caucasian’, from Droylesden, Lancs.
The musical contribution to South Australia that this family made is immeasurable, many amateur delighting audiences with their expertise and emerging talent still practising. Edward himself played the organ at St Lukes in Whitmore Square for 44 years, his son Abel played for 35 years at St Michaels Mitcham – eighty years between the two of them! The rest of the family were all talented giving much of their freely and generously as well as those who made a living from it.
Frank Warhurst taught music for years from his home and from 108 Unley Rd Unley.
They have pianists, organists, violinist, brass and wind players, composers and transposers, conductors and teachers.
Harry Warhurst arrived in 1913 from Glazebury Lancashire and his own line brought it’s own huge music talent. His descendents are Kit and Andre who have been touring London recently with their rock band.
I could go on and on, indeed it is hard for me to stop for this limited edition leaves so much talent unrecognised but I know that readers will get the message and I hope the same inspiration from their family research as I am.
There is a great concentration of Warhurst families in and around the Manchester area –anyone with background before this and any muscial talent I would dearly love to hear from, please write to....

Joseph VINCE (Boer War) / GOLDSMID / HYMAN / DAVIS / GOLDSTEINLooking for information on Joseph VINCE who was born in Ballarat in 1871, 9th of the 10 children of Louis Vince and Sarah GOLDSMID and died in Canada in 1915.

In 1900, aged 29 he joined the British Army, (giving his age as 24 years 6 months), serving 12 years with the Oxfordshire Light Infantry. During this time he served for several months in South Africa, and 10 years in India. Being demobbed in December 1912, he then travelled to Canada where he joined the Royal Canadian Regiment, and was posted to F Company in Esquimault, near Victoria, Canada. He died on 2nd April 1915, aged 44.
I first heard of Joseph when a letter came from Canada, asking if we were perhaps related to him. The enquiry came from Hugh Jones, who has been visiting Joseph’s grave for 5 years, especially on Remembrance Day, when he takes a poppy. The veterans’ branch of the Royal Canadian Regiment have also taken an interest in the grave, and they too place flowers there. The grave is in a Jewish Cemetery in British Columbia.
The reason for the enquiry is because the custodian of the cemetery is writing a profile of all those resting there, and their extended families. It is felt that if there are any descendants of the VINCE family here in Australia, they may like to not only know what happened to Joseph, but also to have some input into the profile.
From Hugh’s own investigations we know that Joseph’s father Louis died in 1899 in Ballarat East and his mother in 1904, also in Ballarat East. Of his siblings, his sisters Rose and Fanny, and his brother Edward, married and had children. Edward’s 3 children , Frank (1910), Katie (1911) and Robert (1912) were all born in Ballarat. Their mother was Maud HYMAN.
Rose married Joseph DAVIS in 1883 and moved to South Melbourne, where her children George(1884), Violet(1888) and Frank(1893) were born, whilst Fanny married Aaron GOLDSTEIN and had 4 children – Louis(1886), Myra(1888), Daisy(1889) and Percy(1891), all in the Melbourne area.
Of the other siblings, Gabriel died in 1934 in Royal Park, Catherine in 1945 in Ballarat, Samuel in 1946 in Camberwell, Rachel in 1934 in St. Kilda, and John in 1870 at 1 year of age. I have no information on the youngest child Aaron, except for his birth date - 1874 in E. Ballarat.
It would seem that Joseph had no relations in Canada, and although my husband is not in any way related to him (as far as we know), I was greatly intrigued by the story and therefore decided to try and find any descendants from the family.
If you are related in any way to Joseph’s family, or know anything which will help in tracking them, please contact me.

LANGMy LANG line came to Ballarat from Ayreshire, Scotland. They were Robert LANG and Margaret Gillies KING - I am not sure if they married in Scotland or Australia.
Contact: Linden Outteridge - EMAIL: linnyo@bravo.net.auThey had several children that I know of - John Hamilton LANG b. 1870, James Campbell LANG b. 1872, Margaret Thompson LANG b. 1874 and Robert LANG b. 1876. In 1876, the year of Robert juniors birth, both Margaret Gillies (KING) LANG died, as did, her son, John Hamilton LANG. I wonder what happened to the male members of this family.
My Great Grandmother, Margaret Thompson LANG, was sent to the Hunter Valley region in 1876 and lived with a family, named MANNERS, though no one in the family are aware of a family connection. She later worked as the housemaid and carer of their children, prior to her marriage to my Great Grandfather William DAVIS.
If anyone can shed light on what happened to Robert Snr., Robert Jnr. or James Campbell LANG, I would be most grateful for any information.

DASCOMBE NuggetI'm on the trail of John Milton Dascombe who left Bath, England, for Australia in the mid1840s but died in London in 1868. He was licensee of the Woolpack on Flinders St, Melbourne in the early 1850s and at his death still owned property in Melbourne. Recently I came across a reference, Web Link to the find in 1851 of a large gold nugget which acquired the name The Dascombe, but have not been able to get any more information about it. As Dascombe is an unusual name I'm assuming that John Milton Dascombe was the finder and that it was named after him. Can anybody throw light on this association?
