John HICKS b. 1795, Ireland, son of John HICKS and Mary MILLER was to married Ellen DALTON b. ca 1808, Ireland daughter of Robert DALTON and Ellen WINTERS and they both died in Merino, John in 1881 and Ellen in 1882.

John Hicks, his wife Ellen (Dalton) and their eight children along with Robert Darlington BUCKLEY arrived in Portland on the "Cairngorm" in 1855.

They stayed in Portland for a short while before John purchased Allotment 16, Section 1 in the township of Merino at auction in 1856.

John, Ellen and their grandson are buried in the Merino Cemetery.

Robert purchased Township Allotment 2 in Turnley Street as well as selection acerage in Grassdale before moving on to Lawloit.

3. John Dalton HICKS b. ca 1836 d. 1915 (age on ship 19 does not match at death 70 in 1915;
