Hugh McINTYRE 1821-1883 & Grace YOUNG 1813-1880
Scotland; Van Diemen's Land; "Fox Hall" Casterton & "Hopetoun" Hamilton, Victoria, Australia; "Merino Downs" New Zealand Hugh McINTYRE b. 1821, Perthshire, Scotland, son of Donald McINTYRE & Mary McNAB was married in Campbell Town, Van Diemen's Land in 1844 to Grace YOUNG, b. 1813, Kirkliston, Scotland, daughter of James YOUNG and Isabella PUNTON. Hugh McINTYRE arrived in Van Diemen's Land from from Scotland in 1842 and married Grace YOUNG who had also arrived from Scotland in 1843. Their first child Donald Hugh McINTYRE was born near Launceston in 1845 and the family sailed from Launceston to Portland Bay, Victoria in 1846. Hugh & Grace McINTYRE appear to have joined John PEARSON, also from Scotland and Van Diemen's land at "Retreat Station" on the Glenelg River, north of Casterton. Their next three children were born at "Retreat Station" 1846-1849. Hugh McINTYRE appears to have occupied the "Fox Hall" Pastoral Run, north west of "Retreat" from September 1849 to March 1855. It was during this time that two more children were born, this time at "Fox Hall Station". The McINTYRE family moved to Hamilton in 1855. The McINTYRE family emigrated to New Zealand on the per "Rangitoto" in 1867 and settled near Gore in the South Island. Hugh called his pastoral lease "Merino Downs", probably named after "Merino Downs" the first pastoral lease near Casterton, Victoria, occupied by the HENTY Brothers in 1837.
