Notes from American Lalors

The photo is the Lalor Tenakill Manor House in Co. Laois, Ireland (formerly Queen's Co.), located in the Raheen area near Mountrath. "Tenakill", meaning house in the woods.

The house is thought to have been built in 1771 by Patrick Lalor #1, Peter's grandfather, with this photo taken in the 1890's. The house has not been occupied since the 1960's and has not been restored. Patrick's son Patrick (Honest Pat) was born here and became a leader in the Anti-tithe Movement in the 1830's. He was later elected to represent Queens Co. in the Parliment in London. Patrick and his wife, the former Ann Dillon had several children that were very well educated. Patrick # 2's son Richard succeeded him in the Parliment. James Fintan Lalor, eldest son of Patrick agitated for land reform. His arguments on this subject were published in Dublin newspapers.
